Who Controls the Poker GameThe player who controls the game is a position that is coveted by people around the table. The best player is always the who is in control. He controls himself, his opponents and the game. Succeeding in controlling himself through psychological and mental discipline have a certain domino effect that leads to understanding of opponents and then the overview of the whole game. When a player is in control, be becomes the center of attention. His opponents spend a bulk of their time studying them and pour all their efforts to figuring out what he'll do next and then adjusting to his plays. Without them, knowing it, the player can control them this way by his bluffs and his ploys. From this position, the player can influence the betting, raising, and bluffing of his opponents; lead opponents to his traps and mistakes; turn his opponents' attention to each other so he can play them off against each other. On the other hand, the player who strives continually for maximum poker odds investment cannot control the game. Why? Because by making a play that yield to a maximum return reduces their flexibility to control the game. It's either you shoot for maximum investment or maximum edge odds. The one who controls the game applies a wide variety of tactics. Sometimes he employs tactics that are slightly less favorable in odds. To illustrate this strategy: The player backs away from the maximum investment odds so that he can bet more aggressively and be more flexible in his plays. He is aggressive and flexible that he can lead his opponents to do his desired effect on the game. In the same way, the good player can under-bet a hand and then over-bet a similar hand so that he would appear to his opponents as unpredictable. By being flexible and unpredictable this way, he controls the game. His opponents are mystified by him. Money directs itself to the player who controls the betting. So the optimal time to control betting is to control it early in the hand, while the betting are still small. The player who gains control are often the one who suddenly makes unexpected bets (such as raising against the strength of an opponent), by larger than usual first bets or by a weird bet. By doing so, he makes offensive and defensive betting that manipulates the big last betting and raising rounds. Offensive Manipulations of bets are initiated to build pots, encourage players to stay on the betting rounds, set up bluffs and ploys, and induce opponents to bluff. Whereas defensive manipulations are used to suppress bets and raises, prevent bluffs, and drive out players to their claim of the pot. |
